RIP, David Bowie

“The truth is of course that there is no journey. We are arriving and departing all at the same time.”

– David Bowie

Crushing news tonight. David Bowie has passed away.

Musician, artist and resident alien. Unapologetically weird and wonderful shape-shifting human being.

Two of my favourite Bowie tracks are ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and ‘Life On Mars’.

I can still remember listening to ‘Ziggy Stardust’ sometime in the late 70s or early 80s, and trying to decipher the lyrics in my Swedish tween/teen head, writing them out in a notebook (probably getting it all wrong, and no Google to help me). To me, he was/is rock and roll and science fiction, all rolled into one.

When I worked in a bar in Portugal in another life, ‘Suffragette City’ was a constant on the playlist:

Hey man, my school day’s insane
Hey man, my work’s down the drain
Hey man, well she’s a total blam-blam
She said she had to squeeze it but she then she

It was like he was singing right into that hot and sweaty bar crowd, singing about us, knowing exactly what was going down: “wham bam thank ya ma’am”. Well, of course he knew.

Bowie’s son, director Duncan Jones, posted this on Twitter tonight.

Rest in peace, David Bowie.

  1. Oh, Maria, what is going on in recent days? My soul has been heavy with the passing of my Dad, Lemmy and now David Bowie. I can’t even choose one song from David Bowie that I dislike, from any of his albums. IMO, David Bowie created Alternative Rock and is an icon that was/is beyond unique. I love how you described David Bowie’s lyrics & music affected you, so long ago. Let’s celebrate David Bowie’s songs today and enjoy them to the fullest.

    1. I know what you mean about a heavy soul, though for you the loss has hit so close to him. I can’t quite believe Bowie really is dead, I kept telling myself it must be a hoax, but then… yeah. Dark days, but it is good to remember that all these people were with us once, and created things, and left memories. RIP, to all of them.
